Does My Cat Love Me? Five Ways to Gauge Your Attachment With Your Cat

Cats are known to be fiercely independent. As a result, many human companions find them mysterious and aloof. Many cat owners even wonder, "Does my cat love me?" Well, our kitties may not be as introverted as they seem.

PrettyLitter Does My Cat Love Me? Four Ways to Gauge Your Attachment With Your Cat

In 2019, Oregon State University conducted a fascinating experiment focused on cat attachment. Researchers placed individual kittens and their owners in empty rooms for two minutes, then separated the kittens from their parents for another two minutes. Finally, kittens reunited with their owners for another two minutes.

After cats and their owners were reunited, the researchers noticed that 64% of the cats sought out their owner for comfort after being separated – indicating that the kittens were securely attached to their owners. On the other hand, 34% did not seek out their owners after being reunited, indicating that they were insecurely attached.

Most cats, it turns out, do feel safe and comforted in the presence of their owner. Here's how you can confirm whether you and your fur baby share a secure attachment.

She Kneads into You

It feels good to be needed, but it doesn't always feel good to be kneaded. Cats are kneading when they apply pressure with their paws in an alternating pattern, often gripping with their claws at the same time.

When your cat is kneading you, she's displaying her love for you. As a kitten, she kneaded her mother to stimulate milk production and she may knead you because she associates you with similar comfort and care.

She Rubs Against You

Has your cat ever rubbed or brushed her head against you? Our feline friends rub against us to mark their territory.

Rubbing on you tells other kitties that you are her human. Your cat is claiming you as her own, so there's no need to ask "does my cat love me?"

She Makes Eye Contact With You

Cats' eyes are very expressive. Extended eye contact, slow blinking, and half-open eyes all indicate that your kitty feels relaxed and not threatened. If you catch your cat lounging with her eyes barely open, she's probably feeling at ease, which means she trusts you and feels safe in your presence.

If your kitty slowly opens and closes her eyes while looking at you, she's performing the slow blink of trust. It's her simple way of telling you that she trusts you deeply and is comfortable having you around.

PrettyLitter Does My Cat Love Me? Four Ways to Gauge Your Attachment With Your Cat

She Gives You Kisses

If your kitty sometimes grooms you, then that's a good sign! Many fur babies lick their owners to mix their scents together. According to the experts at Animal Planet, when a cat licks you, rubs on you, and licks you again, she is grooming you and depositing her scents on your skin – something all cats do with their babies and parents.

When your cat gives you kisses, she's not only showing affection – she's using that combined scent to recognize you as her own trusted family.

She Follows You Everywhere

As a cat owner, you know you never really are alone. If your fur baby tags along for your brief bathroom trips or sits beside your leg as you're cooking, she's definitely attached to you.

According to the creators of Science Diet pet food, when your kitty displays this type of behavior, she's attempting to spend as much time with you as possible – even if she doesn't have your full attention. She's saying, "Your my person and I feel safe around you."

So... Does My Cat Love Me?

It's important to remember that every kitty is different. If your cat doesn't perform any of these behaviors, it doesn't mean that she's not attached to you. Regardless of the specific ways she shows her love, your cat does rely on you for love, comfort, and safety.

You may have asked yourself, "Does my cat love me? Like, really love me?" The answer is yes, no matter how your cat expresses it.

Does your kitty do anything special to show her affection? We'd love to hear about it! Comment below and tell us all about her special gestures.

My cat follows me everywhere purring the whole time. He brings me chew toys to play fetch. He often looks in my eyes and as soon as i put a blanket across my lap or get comfortable he curls up on my lap for a nap. When we are in the kitchen he rolls on his back and purrs for a belly rub. When he curls up w me i am able to sleep restfully. Yes my cat loves me! He is 4.5 yrs, sleek black and beautiful.

We have three cats and a small dog in our home. The dog is our mother’s, one cat is my younger sister’s, one is my youngest sister’s, and the last cat is mine.

My cat, Amelia, will come up to me while I’m in bed and nestle down right on my chest, and go to sleep there. Being disabled, and having a medical need to elevate my feet as much as I can, I spend a LOT of time in bed, with Amelia nestled right on my chest, purring happily.

When I’m not in bed, Amelia loves to settle down for a nap right in the spot where my butt hits the sheets, where my scent is the strongest. If I have pulled my blanket up to make my bed, she still settles in on the blanket in the same spot.

Every time I leave for dialysis, when I come home, she is right there in my face, talking to me and asking for pettings and scritches, and for more water for “her” bamboo cuttings (she loves drinking their water!).

She often follows me to the bathroom, too, and will either use her litterbox at the same time, or will jump up onto the counter by the sink and watch me through the mirror, until I come to wash my hands; at that point, she asks for pettings, and for water in her bathroom bowl (they have water bowls all over the house!)

The other two cats, and the little dog, are all very fond of me, but I am not their “chief of staff,” since they have each chosen someone else to be their very special person, and that’s just fine! We each have our very special furbaby who has chosen us to love the most!

My 5 yr old tuxedo rescue does all of the above although I don’t appreciate him nearly tripping me up in a race to the bathroom! Lol
The one thing I find rather disconcerting is that before he snuggles next to me in bed he does that licking but always tries to “kiss” me on the lips! I’m not sure I’m comfortable with that but he sure is!
Do any of your fur babies aim for your lips like they know that’s where kisses belong?!?

My cat runs through his tube. He has one of those collapsible crinkly play tubes for cats and when he runs through it, we tell him what a good boy he is. Now he does it to please us, and when he gets scolded for getting into mischief he does it to make up for his wrongdoing.

She doesnt knead me but she use to suck my neck & go to sleep. She is too big now . I dont know if anyone has ever had this done to them & maybe it does sound weird I figured she though i was her mother

Rufio kneads my stomach while I read in bed before I sleep, and the kittens touch my nose with their noses. They all also follow me around the house and rub up against my legs. But I feel the most special when I get the nose touches. :)

Willie when I get home from work and he wants me to pet him, usually when I am trying to change my clothes. He will look at me and cry without sound. He also does a lot of touching with his paw, like a high five. When I am on the toilet he will get his paw and try to touch my face. He wants me to lean down so he can kiss me. Except when he is being spunky and that is a trick to nip my cheek. He runs after he does it because I always say, No bite mommy.

It was fun reading this My cat does everything but give me kisses. She loves when I kiss her head but she does not come and give me a kiss. Guess I am lucky she does all the rest. She sure follows me from room to room most days

My cats are definitely attached to me… The biggest sign I’ve seen is that whenever one of them has been sick enough to be hospitalized, I end up having to spend hours every day with them (either leaning into their cage or sitting in a visiting room) because they often won’t sleep or eat unless I’m present.

A few years ago, Belle (now age 19.5) had a bleeding stroke a few years ago that temporarily paralyzed her, so I had to help her learn to stand up & walk again while holding her up in a towel “sling” under her belly. She learned in part because she became determined to be with me all the time; initially I’d step forward a bit then help her as she struggled to come alongside me again, then once she was able to stand on her own, I’d walk a little ways, and she’d do her wobbly little mincing walk after me like a drunk kitten.

14-year-old Holly knows that at night, after my mother is done upstairs, I head up there and spend 1-2 hours doing medical treatments, during which she can have me to herself… So as soon as Mom’s on her way, Holly begins running up and down the staircase, mewing excitedly at both the top & bottom as if to say, “come on, hurry up!”

We have 5 purr babies. Grayson (brother &father) I three and he is the real lover. He will get in my lap and lay like a baby. He nips me if I quit petting him and if I’m walking he will “Hurd” me the direction he want me to go( usually towards the food) and nip my ankle to get me going if I stop. He’s a white and gray heavyweight.
Callie, (Grayson‘a sister) is a short haired calico. She has always been more stand-off ish until latly. After her first and only litter she became more of a outdoor cat until this winter. She is staying inside more now and gets in my bed at night and needs my covers. The sound drives me nuts. I pet her and try to get her to stop but she just moves farther down the bed and starts again. I don’t scold her, just tell her I love you too.
The babies: 2 1/2 years, the only two of the five litter Callie and Grayson produced are
Domino ( white with a black tail and ears) she sleepers on my husbands computer unless I lay down to watch tv in their room, at witch she crawls up on me and finds my hand and insists I rub her head. She will sleep forever with my hand covering her face , if I move it she will seek it out and want me to put it back. She and her sister are mostly inside kitty’s.
Spencer is a long haired calico with curly hair in her ears, but she , like her mommy doesn’t require a lot of attention she comes to me when she’s ready and will be content to just sit I. My lap till she ready to go but I have noticed if I’m under the weather and just feel like laying around she’s the one that will cuddle with me.
My family call me the cat lady now… I’m 70, and never cared much for cats before. But I love my babies along with the three dogs we’re a big happy family.

Both of my cats exhibit those behaviors, one especially so. He likes nothing better than to be cuddled up against my neck. He purrs his little heart out and ‘grooms’ my hair. My female cat loves to kiss my face and sleep on top of me.
Both cats are just as loving to my husband as well and they both know their name and come when we call them! We couldn’t love them more.

My little Sweatpea is the best cat I have ever had. She follows us around, she licks and kneads us she purrs nonstop and she runs to the window when we come home. She is very vocal. She meows at us to wake up and when she wants food. She even meows for her walks. She meows till we pet her sometimes then curls up on us. She is almost completely def so her meows are quite loud. Affectionate and sweet !!

My Dolly will pat me with here paw. I know if it’s a I’m hungry or get out of bed and feed me poo at. She also will pat me and when I get up and will lead me to the kitchen for something to eat, the bath room (you forgot to clean my litter box), to the door to apartment so she can peek into the hall. Her little paw pats are her way of communicating with me.

It took my rescue cat a good month & a half to come around. She had been through a lot in her 8 month life. Now, almost 4 months later, she is a different kitty. Loving and has very few trust issues. Her routine is to play and then take cat naps on my lap. She does this all evening, every day.

Lol! Our cat, Booms, does all the above! One quirky thing he does that really shows that he loves us so much is: whenever we arrive home, he’ll go straight to the litter pan and drop a surprise for us! And I mean…every…single…time! Now that’s love…I guess (scratches head)!

My Kitty follows me to the bathroom, gives me hugs for his food, but he also gives me what I call Love Nips. The first time he did it, he scared me as I thought he was biting me, but then I realized he doesn’t bite down hard enough to break the skin. I have gotten so I don’t let it alarm me anymore. He also likes to come sit in my lap when I am in the recliner. He did it as a kitten when I was recuperating from surgery. He is now 9 & still comes for his time with Mom. He will even jump around Daisey (dog) to get there.
